April 16, 2010, what’s so special about that day besides being a holiday? Well, it’s the first day of Ozinefest 2010. I was expecting a lot of people to be coming today because it is a holiday but when I got there I was surprised that there were not much con-goers. In fact, it was err spacious. Ozinefest 2010 was held in Megtrade Hall 1 and 2 in Megamall. The area is really big but when the place is filled with people its hard to move around but that FRIDAY, it was easy to move around in the morning but by afternoon, it’s another story.

There were not much cosplayers but a lot of con-goers. Actually, a lot of KPOP fans came because the main event on it’s first day was the KPOP/JPOP dance contest. So I’m gonna talk about that and a few other things okay?

Okay first it was a good idea to have a KPOP/JPOP dance contest. For someone like me who is a KERKER Fan (those who likes the Korean fashion, music and dramas) and a JPOP fan combine, I would love to see this one. It also adds up that I have friends joining the competition.

While waiting for the competition to start, I was roaming around the place looking for my friends who are well scattered in the area. First, I dropped by my friends’ booth. They sell contact lenses and shirts and wigs. They were kind enough to have me hang around and have their area as my baggage counter. After that, I roamed around the area and found myself lost. Yes you read that correctly. I got lost inside a convention hall . How on earth that happened? Well probably because of the layout of the place. I found myself getting lost in it. I was like “Awww fuck, I’m lost, where am I? Where’s the effing exit?!” Another thing, joining Megatrade Hall 1 and 2 will denote BIG. So having the ENTRANCE on a certain side in the EXIT on the other side is well, nice but the problem is, they have an area blocked that could be a shortcut towards the exit. You see like what I mentioned awhile ago, if there’s a lot of people inside the convention hall it’s kinda hard to move and walk without bumping into someone. So for someone who needs to get out of the convention hall, he/she has the brave the crowd before getting out. I remember someone I knew inside asking me how am I doing as I walk towards the exit. I replied, “Oh fine, just trying to get out alive.”

That person? He chuckled and wished me luck.

There were also two stages. One near the entrance and the other one near the exit. The one near the entrance is the main stage. The one near the exit is the stage is where the mini-games were held like the karaoke singing contest and eating contest. I have to say, that’s a great idea. Putting two stages is very dynamic and it keeps people entertained more. I happen to watch a few of the contestants go at the karaoke singing contest. They have to sing a capella in style.

The stage near the EXIT

Now for me this is a good way to judge the contest. Well in a capella, there is no music accompaniment, each contestant’s will be singing relying on the power of their voices. You can immediately hear if they are singing out of tune or if they don’t have control of hitting the notes like if their b flats doesn’t sound like a b flat.

Some of the contestants were really good. In fact if I were to join I would be intimidated by them. I’m not really a good singer. I just pretend that I’m good singer hahahahahaha . I noticed that most of the contestants tries to imitate the voice of the singers of the songs they’re singing. Uhhh I don’t have anything against that but trying to imitate a certain voice can be a disadvantage. I mean if you focus too much on imitating the voice so that you can sing like those singers you hear you might not just hit the right note accurately. Try singing it in your normal voice range. Also don’t try to hit high notes if you can’t reach it. The advantage of singing in a capella you have a control of the song your singing. So if you want to sing the song in a tone that you can reach you have every right so. This way you will have an easier time singing a song.I’m not an expert okay? It is just I’m sharing the tips my older sister gave me since she had voice lessons and would always whack me if I try imitating certain voice ranges I could not even reach.

Okay let’s go back to business, around 3:30 PM I decided to take a seat in front the main stage ecstatic to watch the KPOP/JPOP dance competition. We were told that the competition will start at 4PM but it started around 4:30PM. While waiting for the dance competition to start, the band Rtshrck entertained the crowd with their awesome metal music. I had the inkling to do a headbang but I was cosplaying Kagamine Rin at that time sooo the image is not right and so out of character too. So I had to settle with this smile on my face .

As the emcees took the stage, I spotted my friends Kune, Pao, Apol, Kito and their group going to the back stage. I left my spot to wish them luck. They were the first group to perform. Here is their performance. Sorry for the noise and how shaky the video is. I kept on screaming and spazzing I almost lost my voice.

I was not able to take videos of the other contestants because, my camera is about to lose batteries already. I tried taking pictures but it didn’t come out well. Yeah I know fail .

Me and my seatmate who is a friend also were discussing how the judges comment on the performances of each group. One of the judges kept on insisting that the theme is anime. Yes the convention itself is an anime convention but the theme of the dance competition is KPOP/JPOP. Which leads to another concern of ours and some of the fellow contestants. You see, the 2nd group who performed well… they were really good as in PROFESSIONAL LEVEL good. They have awesome dance moves and stunts that thing is…. they didn’t as in didn’t use a single KPOP or JPOP music in it. Huh what? WHAT?! . How did that group get in the first place? Was there even a screening done before this? I don’t know, I just feel that there should be a screening before the final competition. I’ve heard that group 2 won and competed abroad already. This also makes me question the criteria of the competition. Was is the criteria anyway? Also I’ve been hearing other certain issues regarding the competition that I rather not dabble on.

At the end of the competition, it was not group who 2 won but another group. My friend’s didn’t win but I can say they did a great job already in their performance. The group who won danced to Wedding Dress by Taeyang from BigBang and ended their routine by dancing to Nobody from Wonder Girls. They were really good. They’re like 2 girls and the rest are guys. When they were dancing to Nobody, the guys have more swag and hip movements than the girls that it was hilarious and fun to watch at the same time.

All of the group performances were amazing. It’s just sad that nobody did JPOP. All except group 2 used KPOP music. Truly the otakus and the people here are having the Korean fever. Badly. Not that I’m complaining, after all I myself is a KPOP fan.

At the end of the day, I had a great time. I was with friends and the I enjoyed watching the dance competition. So here I share some pictures from the event.
